SBA 504: FEDERAL INITIATIVE EMPOWERS WOMEN-OWNED BUSINESSES
Submitted by David W. Amick
Executive Director, Premier Capital Corporation

When Deborah Peters launched Quality Environmental Professionals, Inc. ("QEPI") in early 1996, she was confident she could establish a top-notch environmental-engineering firm. She also knew that a woman-owned engineering firm would be a tough sell in a male-dominated industry. Today, QEPI is a national player in the environmental / engineering / health and safety management consulting industry with offices in Indiana (headquarters), Pennsylvania and Colorado. Ms. Peters shares a common foundation with tens of thousands of other successful American entrepreneurs who have enjoyed the benefits of the U.S. Small Business Administration's 504-loan program.

As Executive Director of Premier Capital Corporation, ("Premier") it has been extremely gratifying to help visionaries such as Ms. Peters enjoy the benefits of this outstanding initiative. A 501(c)3 non-profit organization, Premier Capital Corporation is a Certified Development program accredited by the SBA. Premier and other organizations work with banks to assist Central Indiana businesses with their expansion plans. Long-term financing with as little as 10% down is available on loans from $125,000 to more than $5 million. Since 1976 more than 5,500 jobs have been created in our area through SBA 504 programs processed specifically by Premier, and thousands of additional jobs through applications processed by other financial-related institutions.

QEPI's diverse staff is now comprised of 36 employees, including engineers, geologists, toxicologists and industrial hygienists. QEPI's accelerated growth has created the need for a larger facility. With help from Premier Capital, the U.S. Small Business Administration and Bank One, QEPI purchased a 12,000-square-foot building on Indianapolis' southeast side, which has undergone a complete interior and exterior renovation.

The SBA 504 initiative is one federal program that returns its investment to tax payers many times over, creating thousands of new jobs every year and generating millions in income and related taxes. Unfortunately, it has been my experience that many of our brightest business owners are not aware of the many pathways to success that SBA 504 makes available. Deborah Peters would never have known had it not been for her knowledgeable banker.

For more information on how small businesses can benefit from the SBA 504 program, I encourage them to contact their banker or one of the staff at Premier Capital Corporation (317) 974-0504.
